Music in School

My soap box moment- since Joy had one last week. This country is seriously messed up when they won't fund music and art in school!- Okay, California is messed up, but I know there are other places too. I attended, with my mom, the Irvine School District Honors Concert last night at the OC Performing Arts Center. It was AWESOME!!! There was a choir and orchestra from each level- elementary, middle and high school. They were truly incredible. My mom was even teary by the end as they finished with the high school orchestra playing "The Battle Hymn Republic" as all three choirs sang. We are lucky to live in Irvine where the parents and local companies make up the difference each year to pay for music in our schools. I know there are people in Sacramento and elsewhere that will say, "Kids can take private lessons." Well, guess what? Not everyone can afford lessons and even if you take lessons, playing by yourself for your teacher or even at a recital is not the same as playing with a 100 other kids in an orchestra with a real conductor! Same goes for a choir really- singing by yourself doesn't teach you about harmonies, blending, matching your voice, etc.

Music and art are not extras- they are part of a true education. There is my two cents!

I heard once a story on the radio about by schools in Finland were so off the charts in math testing and the researchers linked it to the success of the music education in early years. Apparently, music and mathematics are linked. Counts, rhythms all that stuff helped with math later on. We could learn a thing or two from that system....
